100% private. The AI model downloads to your browser and runs locally. Your images never leave your device. First use downloads ~46 MB (cached for future use).

What Is AI Background Removal?

AI background removal uses a trained neural network to detect the main subject in an image — a person, product, animal, or object — and separate it from the background. The result is a clean cutout with a transparent background, ready for use in designs, e-commerce listings, presentations, or social media.

How ZipTools Background Remover Works

Unlike most background removal tools (remove.bg, Canva, Adobe), ZipTools runs the AI model entirely in your browser. Here's what happens:

  1. Upload your image — drag and drop or click to browse (PNG, JPEG, or WebP up to 20 MB)
  2. The AI model loads — on first use, a ~46 MB ONNX model (IS-Net) downloads from ZipTools to your browser and is cached for future visits
  3. Processing happens locally — the model runs via WebAssembly in a background thread, so the page stays responsive while it separates foreground from background
  4. Download the result — save a transparent PNG (convert it to WebP with the Image Compressor if you need a smaller file)

Your images never leave your device. There's no server, no upload, no cloud processing. Once the model has loaded, you can even disconnect from the internet and keep removing backgrounds.

Practical Examples

Product Photos for E-Commerce

Upload a product photo taken on any background → get a clean transparent cutout → place on white or custom background for your listing.

Profile Pictures & Headshots

Remove messy backgrounds from portraits → use the transparent result in presentations, team pages, or social media avatars.

Design & Compositing

Extract subjects from photos → layer them in Figma, Photoshop, or Canva → create professional compositions without manual masking.

Tips for Best Results

  • High contrast between subject and background gives the cleanest edges
  • Clear subjects (people, products, animals) work best — abstract shapes may confuse the model
  • Good lighting reduces edge artifacts around hair and fine details
  • Solid backgrounds produce cleaner results than busy, textured ones
  • If a thin halo of the old background remains, raise Edge trim to 1–3 px
  • If edges look rough, try uploading a higher resolution version

Limitations

  • Maximum file size: 20 MB (10 MB on phones)
  • Supported formats: PNG, JPEG, WebP
  • First-time download: ~46 MB AI model (cached after first use)
  • Processing time: about 10–30 seconds depending on your device (longer on phones)
  • Complex scenes: Images with multiple overlapping subjects or very fine details (thin hair strands, lace) may have imperfect edges
  • Browser support: Requires a modern browser with WebAssembly SIMD and module Web Workers (Chrome 91+, Edge 91+, Firefox 114+, Safari 16.4+)

FAQ

Is this really free? Yes, completely free with no limits. There's no account, no watermark, no "premium" tier. The AI runs in your browser.

Are my images safe? Your images never leave your device. There's no server involved. You can verify this by disconnecting from the internet after the model loads — it still works.

How is this different from remove.bg? remove.bg uploads your image to their servers for processing. ZipTools processes everything locally in your browser. No upload, no privacy risk, no per-image limits.

Why is the first use slower? The AI model (~46 MB) needs to download once. After that, it's cached in your browser and loads instantly on future visits.

Can I use this on mobile? Yes, but processing is slower on mobile devices due to limited computing power. For best results, use a desktop or laptop.

Which AI model does it use? IS-Net ("Highly Accurate Dichotomous Image Segmentation", Qin et al., ECCV 2022), an open-source model released under the Apache 2.0 license, run with Microsoft's ONNX Runtime Web. The model file is served from ZipTools itself, so nothing is fetched from third-party AI services.
